Domino Papers: A Historical Craft Reimagined for the Modern World
For centuries, beautifully patterned papers have adorned books, boxes, and homes. Among the most captivating of these are Domino papers — a decorative art form that bridges printmaking, design, and history. Once a hallmark of 18th-century European craftsmanship, Domino papers are finding new life in the hands of modern artists and makers.
At Lilyanne Design Studio, we’ve revived this tradition through hand-designed artisan craft papers that celebrate history while offering endless creative possibilities.
A Brief History of Domino Papers
Domino papers (sometimes called “Dominoes” or “domino paper prints”) originated in France and Italy during the 1700s. These patterned sheets were hand-block printed and stenciled, then brushed with pigment or metallic dust to create luminous, intricate designs.

Each sheet, often around 12" x 16", was sold individually and used to line drawers, wrap gifts, or cover books and boxes. The word “Domino” may stem from dominus (Latin for “master”) or from the patterned cloaks called “dominos” worn at masquerades — fittingly elegant roots for such refined papers.

By the late 18th century, Domino papers were beloved across Europe, their delicate motifs found in stationers’ shops from Paris to Venice. Eventually, industrial wallpaper and mass printing replaced them, but the allure of these handcrafted designs never faded.
The Enduring Beauty and Use of Domino Papers
Though rare today, original Domino papers remain prized for their color, texture, and hand-crafted charm. Their appeal extends far beyond collectors — modern artisans and creatives are rediscovering their versatility in everyday projects.
