Embracing Nordic Heritage: Designing the Norse Pattern Collection

Embracing Nordic Heritage: Designing the Norse Pattern Collection

I've always been interested in my heritage. Years ago I sent my DNA to Ancestry to better understand where my ancestors came from and what DNA they've shared with me. Based on my DNA, I am from Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, England and Northwestern Europe mostly. These are all regions that between AD 800 to 1050, the Vikings raided, pillaged, and/or settled. My inspiration for designs arise from many places, but my heritage is a HUGE one. I love to research and learn more about my ancestors during the brain storming phase of designing. It makes me feel more connected to the designs.

The Norse collection was inspired by a blend of Viking-age mythology and Nordic aesthetic. As a textile designer, I wanted to merge ancient motifs with modern sensibilities, creating designs that feel both timeless and contemporary. I designed this collection specifically for children. Children’s designs need to be captivating, gentle, and imaginative. Each pattern in this collection introduces them to elements of Norse mythology, like Nordic Gods and ancient symbols, all interpreted with a softer, more whimsical touch. Think gentle waves, playful motifs, and earthy colors, ideal for any child’s space.

The Inspiration Behind the Patterns

The Norse culture, rich with mythology and artistry, inspired each piece in this collection. Symbols of strength and nature are central, with patterns incorporating Nordic knots, geometric symmetry, and hues of the Northern landscape. The subtle blues and earthy tones reflect the serene, powerful natural environment of the Nordic countries, connecting each design to the raw beauty of the region.

Bringing the Collection to Life

Here are a few key designs elements from the Norse collection that are perfect for kids’ products:

  1. Ships, Knots, and Helmets: Motifs that represent elements of the Viking culture are included in each pattern.
  2. Gentle Waves and Blowing Wind: These designs introduce subtle, calming elements of nature.
  3. Story-Inspired Patterns: Imagine ancient symbols in patterns that are softened for a child’s perspective—perfect for both decor and everyday wear.

Crafting Products for Kids with Norse Patterns

These patterns are versatile for a range of children’s items, like cozy blankets, wall art, and apparel:

  • Nursery Decor: From wallpaper to crib sheets, the patterns offer an ambiance of quiet storytelling.
  • Clothing and Accessories: With Nordic motifs and natural colors, children’s clothing and accessories bring a sense of adventure and comfort. The designs are visually engaging but subtle, offering style that parents and kids alike love.

Kids are smart, inquisitive, and have great taste—qualities that deserve designs as unique as they are. With this collection, I wanted to create patterns that spark curiosity and imagination, appealing to their growing minds with visuals that feel engaging, thoughtful, and full of adventure.

This approach emphasizes respect for kids’ ability to appreciate design, bringing them patterns that match their vibrant curiosity and appreciation for beauty.
